Why authentic?!

Let me make this easy for you...Authentic is You! I know, cliche..but it's true. Authentic was formed to showcase female artistry AND to physically bring people together who simply love music and art and want to know the latest in both categories.

We're like..your favorite past time, or at least want to be.

This blog right here....is the outlet in which I will communicate with you because I'm taking a MUCH needed break to just breathe and work on some big projects for 2011.

I have to say, it's been fun partying with all of you! But every now and then...a break is needed, right?! ;-) so i'm taking it.

I wanted to continue to stay active and share with you the many things I find pleasure in. It's true...Authentic was formed because i'm a bit selfish and created something i felt was missing in Philly. As a writer, lover of music and the visual arts...i wanted all of those things in one place.

But, as any goal..once its made, you should ask yourself...What's Next! This is the platform for that next step ;-)

So, without further discourse, I shall jump start @uthentic Favorites!

Today being World AIDS Day! I saw it fitting to expose one of the many campaigns targeting raising funds for children living with HIV/AIDS. Keep a Child Alive promoted their BUY LIFE campaign by featuring celebrities in t-shirts that can be purchased by you...and proceeds will benefit children and the programs and services Keep a Child Alive develops. And, if you don't want a shirt...you can simply donate $..as every penny helps.

Most of you may know that I have a sincere obsession with music...and culture associated with specific music. AfroPunk is one of them...i have been an avid follower of AfroPunk since 2004...and I LOVE what the documentary brought to the Black community of punk music lovers and for those punk music lovers (like me) who never found a place to fit-in musically because many didn't realize that rock is...ahem, Black music!

So, this past summer..AfroPunk hosted their annual festival in Brooklyn and featured an artist we adore so much, Lichiban of nyc!! She's a favorite and anything she does is @uthentic...so if you're in nyc...you should check out the event she's involved in this Saturday!

I'm super excited to be on board as one of the painters working on the massive 100 feet x 8 feet mural that will snake around the park.

We had a promo shoot a couple of weeks ago with some of the artists. The following behind-the scenes shots feature Coby, Rob Focused & See One, three of the dope painters who will be throwing around some paint on Saturday & Sunday. My good friend, activist & art hustla Rasu Jilani of Coup d'Etat Brooklyn was also there to support...I owe him big time for putting me on this year. Thank you!

Also, big shout out to the lovely ladies Jacqwi Campbell who shot the promo video & to Shaunna Randolph who interviewed me and took most of these shots of me below...[ehmm..that was all spontaneous fun... Shaunna is a kinky girl.] Also shout to Toshun Campbell who was on board shooting as well. I'll post Toshun's photos and Jacqwi's promo soon as well.

My girl, Toofly will be representing the female wing and the homie Benjamin Rojas from Trust Your Struggle are also part of the line-up. I mean I feel really lucky to be part of this incredible line-up..it's gonna be epic!

The 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) awards West Philadelphia artists 1 year of free studio space at 40th and Chestnut Sts. In exchange, each artist shares his/her talents with the West Philadelphia community by leading workshops, teaching classes, exhibiting in the area, etc. Founded by artist Edward M. Epstein in 2003, the program addresses the need for studio space in West Philadelphia, assists artists with career development, and makes the 40th Street area a nexus for visual arts.

AIR is NOW accepting applications for the 2010-2011 round of artists. Applications are due May 10, 2010.
The next round begins August 15, 2010 and runs 1 year.

The mission of the 40th Street Artist-in-Residence program is:

· To address the need for artist studio space in West Philadelphia by offering studios rent-free, on a rotating basis, primarily to those artists who reside in/are affiliated with Philadelphia neighborhoods west of the Schuylkill River.

· To assist in the career growth and provide exhibition opportunities for new and emerging artists and those whose work has not been recognized in mainstream venues.

· To enrich the area around 40th Street by placing artists in the neighborhood who share their creative talents with members of the local community.

If accepted to the program, you will be granted a studio space at a site at either 4007 Chestnut or 4013 Chestnut Street for a period of one year, beginning on August 15, 2010 and ending August 15, 2011.

You will be encouraged to use that time to develop your own creative work. In exchange, you will be asked to share your talents with the community through a minimum of 80 hours of outreach work over the course of the year. Examples of this include creating a public installation or holding a workshop or class in the neighborhood. Support will be provided to help you develop this project. In addition, the artists in residence will have opportunities to work together to plan group exhibitions, both of their own work and of their outreach work. Monthly meetings (or more when necessary) will help facilitate this work as well as create opportunities for artists to share ideas and create community.

Please note that the sites are not live-in facilities. The studios are available at all times, but the buildings are shared; you must be considerate of other tenants. The spaces can accommodate a variety of creative activities, including painting, sculpture, installation art, photography, and performance art. Collaborative as well as individual efforts are welcome. Ceilings are high (approximately 12 feet in some areas); rooms range from 100-300 square feet. Some areas have ample natural light, while others have none at all (making them ideal as darkrooms). The studios are not furnished. The buildings also have small yards in the rear that may be used for assembling larger works, or as a place to exhibit sculpture. The spaces have ventilation, running water, and 120- volt AC outlets. However, the facilities will not accommodate highly toxic chemicals, welding, or high-powered electrical equipment. Note also that within the spaces, there is open access to the different work areas; we count on resident artists to show respect for others' property and privacy.

Overall, the 40th Street Artist-in-Residence program strives to create a community of artists who share their talents with each other and with the surrounding community.

We're kicking off the Pride Weekend RIGHT! Last year, if you joined us at STIR, we launched our annual campaign to end domestic violence in intimate partner relationships by having our wall of solidarity and at the end, we raised hundreds of dollars to support the Women's Village that aids in the support to women involved in domestic violent relationships.

This year, we're continuing with our campaign and requesting that you join us in your all BLACK! This is more than just a simple plea to get your attendance...we want to hear you and see you in numbers that you will stand beside us in our efforts to end domestic violence and make available resources for women and men involved in intimate partner violence.

Bridget Kelly: BP3 Tour Diaries // What's in YOUR Wallet?

So ... we're not sure how many of you ladies have been keeping up with Rap-Up.com's Tour Diary with Roc Nation artist/songwriter, Bridget Kelly ... but we thought we'd take it upon ourselves to bring you up to speed on some things ...

Rap-Up TV caught up with rising star Bridget Kelly when she stopped in Los Angeles for Jay-Z’s “BP3” tour last week. ... Check out the plush digs where she eats, breathes, and sleeps when she’s not performing “Empire State of Mind” with her boss nightly.

We were going back through the archives ... and got really into BK. She's totally dope and personable ... and making some really awesome moves right now. We found her pretty @uthentic.

SO VERY CUTE ... was her discussion of her daily must-haves on tour. Catch a brief piece of it below ...

One thing is for sure, life on the road can be long and boring, but I’m good as long as I have:
1. A dope pair of headphones – Some big ones to tune everything out.
2. My BlackBerry – My link to the world!
3. My passport – In case London calls…lol!
4. A couple pairs of shades – My future is looking prettybright.
5. Flatiron – To keep the mane in tact.
6. St. Tropez bronzer – To keep the skin glowing.

Ok ... so I must admit ... we wanted to play TOO! I mean we're movers and shakers over here! Trust us ... :)

lip gloss>>this will definitely show you how girly i am, but i canNOT go without the gloss...and the one pictured is my longtime bff called M.A.C Lipgelee. She's always right on time when the pucker matters!
leather journal>>because my thoughts are always brewing and even though many i do not express verbally, writing down thoughts and moments that deserve documentation are extremely important. Everyone is not a writer, yet everyone has something to say.
wallet>>ummm, that's how the business gets done, ha! or how i eat/live/survive!

well ... i've recently done some downsizing ... mainly because i'm either on the road, or in an airport, or in a meeting ... or ... well you, get it it! i'm always somewhere ...

3. receipts ... i'm a stickler for them ... with retail therapy being my ONLY therapy these days ... i have to leave myself the option to change my mind ... an option any girl should have, right?
4. Corregidora ... what?!? i'm in a PhD program ... this could have been any book ... but there's ALWAYS a book! lol
5. Orbitz ... i've developed a mild addiction thanks to a homie/lover/friend
6. jump drive ... sometimes i need to reach back in the vault ... and do some work that was begun long before we got this iphone.
7. an assortment of lip glosses (what?!? you've seen my lips ... they're absolutely to large to be NONlustrous. lol. cuz that's a word. -_-)
8. burt's bees ... for hands and lips. nj wind and weather is hard for a pimp.
9. digi cam ... for the same reason the flip cam is always with me ... i like to capture things! like hearts. and great lighting! lol.
10. the only louis vuitton thing i've ever had ... (and this may be this way for awhile) ... my change purse turned make-up case. .... what?!? i've never seen anything hold mascara, lipgloss, receipts, the cards and cash (as you see pictured), and cough drops SO WELL!!!

In late 2009 we introduced you to our newest AUTHENTIC chick Shalonda & her mixtape Just Go. We had the privilege to chat with her last month about the radio, the random, & the real. Portion control is key. And we don't want to discourage your sexy. So push that cheese danish to the curb & nibble on the first helping of our three part conversation. It's filling. It's fat free. It's for you. Bon appetite.

Mikey: Thank you so much for agreeing to chat with us. What's one change you wish to see or hear on the radio & on music television?

Shalonda: I'd like to hear REAL music. And when I say "real" I don't mean that in a music snob kind of way. I mean that in a you can actually feel the music kind of way. Not just the beat. Intentional words, Intentional sounds. Honesty. Lyrics that call up memories. That make you think. Make you happy. Make you wanna break up or fall in love...it's just honest...based on what's played on the radio today, when people look back on this generation of popular music, they'll think we were in perpetual party mode. Almost everything on pop radio is about getting wasted and/or shaking your ass...and I don't think that's a REAL representation of what people are doing. EVERYBODY can't be at the club. C'mon son!

Mikey: What was your inspiration for the mixtape? Why'd you choose the songs that you chose?

Shalonda: I was actually working out when i got the idea. I was running the stairs in my apartment building when the instrumental for dj khaled's "i'm so hood" came on. For some reason, I started singing " 'round midnight." Then I started laughing, kept working out and brushed it off. Later that night I told my friend what popped in my head and he was like "You should try it." So I did.

There's a quote by Arthur Ashe that I always refer to when i feel my back is against a wall. He said "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." I can't even begin to tell you how those simple words affected me. I realized that the only thing i could do was use what I had at that very moment. And at the moment, all I had was some instrumentals, a mic and some software.

The craziest part of the whole process was that I had no idea what I was doing AT ALL. I had no idea how to even use recording software, how to set it all up, knew nothing about mics, preamps, nothing about levels, nothing about recording, nothing about nothing. I just went in and felt my way around in the dark and I actually got a mixtape out of the process. And learned a lot.

As far as the songs go, I wrote down all the jazz standards that I've come to love over the years. Then I started going through instrumentals to see what made me dance, made me sad, made me SOMETHING. I just picked things i could FEEL. Everything else happened pretty organically. Certain songs just made sense to me. I thought it would be dope to re-imagine these songs that I'd loved all my life over contemporary tracks.

Mikey: So what is your greatest fear?

Shalonda: I’m afraid of giving up.

YOUNITY PRESENTS: FRESHER! AN ECO-ART EXHIBITION
- Third Annual Exhibit Features 40 Female Avant-Garde Artists Who Recycle & Create Art for the Earth -

Queens, NY (September 3, 2009)— Back for its third annual show, YOUNITY presents an eco-art exhibition entitled  FRESHER!, opening October 3, 2009 at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Educational Center in the Lower East Side section of New York City. Running until October 23, 2009, the exhibit is not the average “white-wall” art show; the all-female collective will transform the art space into an eco-funhouse of raw materials and street art. Elements such as graffiti, photography, design and construction are used to connect ideas about consumerism, environmentalism, health, and renewable energy. The private press hour from 6pm-7pm will grant access to notable, oft-unseen artists right before the public unveiling of work at 8pm. FRESHER! features main-stay YOUNITY artists such as Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, and AIKO while introducing emerging artists such as China Morbosa and Amanda Lopez YOUNITY Co-Founders and artists, Alice Mizrachi and TOOFLY, continue to push the collective to new levels of creativity.

Exhibiting works will mask the bi-level art space with a range of colorful hand-styles, creative graphics on natural textures such as wood and abstract riffs. Some of the artworks will focus on messages about greening and preserving the earth, including recycling, pollution and even ideas about social issues. A video montage will display the collective’s latest effort to Refresh the Streets –a collaborative effort to beautify a 60ft outdoor mural in Williamsburg Brooklyn with colorful, green-themed street art by selected members of the YOUNITY. Exhibiting artists at FRESHER! include SHIRO, Diana McClure, Kerri O’Connell, LICHIBAN, Krista Franklin, Kelly Denato, Niz, Paulina Quintana Jornet, and Cece Carpio, to name a few. Only 40 out of 300 female artists were selected to participate in this special exhibit.

“We wanted to provide a working network of opportunity for female artists,” says YOUNITY Co-founder Alice Mizrachi, “and we, as women, need a space to create art exhibitions, murals, books and a much needed archive of women’s urban contemporary art.” YOUNITY Co-founder TOOFLY adds, “Look at recent events that are affecting us and the next generation: the economy, global warming and healthcare, this is the perfect time to put on a show like FRESHER! and express our creative desire to promote green living and the improvement of our community.”

With the success of their premiere exhibit, The C R O S S O V E R, and the second annual Heart and Soul show, YOUNITY has become one of the most sought after all-female collectives to date. With that, they are devoted to passing the torch on to younger female artists through the YOUNITY Youth team. well, i view poetry the same way...sometimes it's sweet, and sometimes its a bit rough. But all in all...it's necessary and can vividly create an image worth seeing; whether its your mirroring image or a situation...the reality is created through word play and most times, we need to see it!

LYRICAL PLAYGROUND presents just that.
by definition they would consider themselves an outreach program where (they) seasoned poets conduct workshops at Philadelphia high schools and teach poetry as a means for self-expression.

I'd say Lyrical Playground is a savior

When self-expression is so limited these days, our younger generation needs options and this is one of them!

October 2nd and 3rd is a play involving the poets enrolled in this program and their leaders, called The Sound Testament. This is a FUNDRAISER for their upcoming workshops...so @uthentic is requesting your participation!! We'll be there :)

"Show 'em how to move in a room full of vultures," blasted from the speakers of the Carson's Live dance floor on last Friday night. A truer sentiment could not have accompanied the demure Ms. Dawn Richard. One-third of the new Sean "Diddy" Combs trio Dirty Money, Richard's petite frame and new short haircut walked into Carson's Live without an entourage, without a show. As the night progressed, I would find out later that the pomp & circumstance that we've come to associate with many of Combs' artists isn't the first choice of accessory for this artist.

It was the last Friday night of summer, and none of us wanted to let go. We had new money in the bank, and Dirty Money was in the building. I ventured my way into the VIP section as the DJ rocked the vintage Bad Boy Records hit "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems." Barely out of a recession, the irony of the crowd bouncing to this song pulsed with our memories of better times. I watched as Dawn Richard posed for photos with her fans, even migrating onto the dance floor--with little to no security--to show love and appreciation for the crowd. She smiled and hugged club-goers. Her presence and warmth grew with each click and flash. Then it happened. Richard made her way to the stage to introduce the latest track from the Dirty Money project Last Train to Paris.

"Love Come Down," required no introduction. The heavy bass and bells prepped the crowd. It was time to board the Train. What was most amazing is the trance-like energy emitting from the speakers the moment the track began. "Babe," Richard sings, "you got me caught up in this love game/the funny thing is that I don't mind playin'/I'm in it for the win so what you sayin'/I'm ready..." And so was the crowd. "Love Come Down" features Richard and her fellow female Dirty Money member Kaleena Harper longing for love, the kind that makes you feel 'strange', Harper sings.

As I boarded the Last Train to Paris, my first stop was "Love Come Down." I handed my ticket to my conductor, Diddy. As I grabbed my seat, I saw a familiar face--Dawn Richard. Her honeyed voice assured me that though the ride would thump like 808s, the journey--the lyrics--would be worth the trip.

I asked her, "Is Dirty Money worried about alienating their core audience (i.e. fans of the hit television show "Making the Band" & the successful female pop group Danity Kane)?"

"No," she answered confidently.

This reply was not one of arrogance, but rather one of passion and a sincere trust in the talent and art of Dirty Money.

She went on to say, "If it's ten people that understand and love what we're doing...then that's ten people that will support us, that will love us. That's who this project is for. This is something new. This isn't commercial. This is not about numbers and sales. This is about a movement."

And move we will.

Described by Combs as an "electro-hip-hop-soul funk" album", Last Train to Paris is scheduled to be released in November 2009.

As part of the fourth installment of Intermedia Arts' hugely successful festival B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop, this Friday the all-female art show "Mama Said Knock U Out" will open its doors in Prince's hometown, Minneapolis. Curated by Michele Spaise and Theresa Sweetland, "Mama Said Knock U Out" is an international visual art exhibition that will showcase 28 female artists from around the world who use their visual voice to empower, inform and organize. These women are employing hip-hop culture as a means of expression, connection, education and social and political activism globally. The show will feature a select group of very talented female artists who are influenced or work within the hip-hop community.
Representing the feminine wing of the Brooklyn creative force, I'll be showing two pieces entitled Brooklyn Superheroes 1-2, along with the works of my friends & fellow artistas, Abeni Garret, JenOne, Sarah White, Alice Mizrahi, Toofly, & Minneapolis-native C-Rocka.

"Any excuse to get some pussy," pierced the aftershave & witch-hazel filled air that surrounded me as I sat in my barber's chair for my weekly haircut. Queen Latifah's image flashed across the shop's television screen. The entertainment news reporter stated that the performer was publicly announcing that she had suffered sexual abuse as a youth. The reporter went on to say that Latifah revealed the abuse to her parents at age 19, but has more recently come to terms with the abuse as an adult.

Queen Latifah is no stranger to media speculation of her sexuality and she's often answered that she's comfortable with whom she is and that the happenings of her intimate relationships aren't open to the public, hence the title "intimate." Sadly & ignorantly a middle-aged black man felt compelled & comfortable enough to say that this woman who has been a positive role model for women of color and women in general was only coming out with her testimony of survival in order to come out as a lesbian & meet little to no resistance from the public because the anti-gay public (especially the black community that is deeply wrought homophobia) would pity her & write off its disdain for her sexual expression. It is a shame that this man, like many ignorant individuals, forges a correlation between sexual assault or abuse & homosexuality. Fortunately, the work of statistics is on the side of reason. Rape or molestation rarely sways an individual’s sexual preference or orientation.

What was most appalling to me as I sat in Chair #3, I listened to several black men dismiss their sister's testimony for folly. Many saw it like the man who felt her admission was a ploy for her future coming out. Others saw it as unfortunate, but they still “knew” she was gay. Neither group understood that her abuse was the subject of the news broadcast & her expression of her intimacy was not. Still, in this ignorance, many of the men applauded her assumed lesbianism as if she was oddly their comrade. "Bitch betta get that pussy. Ain't nothin' wrong with pussy," they laughed.

How do we alleviate the homophobia & misogyny in these familial spaces? The former stems from the latter, but both do not always so conspicuously share the same space.

The barber shop has been a cornerstone of the black community, providing black American men with solace, dignity, & above all else, brotherhood. Its impact & importance has always carried & sustained by word of mouth -- truly legendary. But it wasn’t until rapper-turned-actor-turned-director Ice Cube explored the barber shop’s role in the black community, how it nursed the black male ego, & how it provided a space for dialogue to progress (and regress), encouraging socio-cultural & political discourse. The barber shop is "the black man's country club," as proclaimed in Ice Cube's movie "Barber Shop." Any topic is up for discussion, elder members have “senrority” (seniority), & pussy is always a sweet topic. Sometimes women are discussed, too. As a black man I listened to men who could be my father or uncle or grandfather degrade Queen Latifah's womanhood, dismiss her struggle, & applaud their own assumptions about her sexuality. All was fine until I spoke up & asked "what if she was your sister or your daughter or wife?" As a gay man I empathize with the need to demand my privacy & my humanity without seeming closeted or not proud of whom I am. There's a fine line between lacking pride & being private. My fellow barber shop attendants seemed to feel that Latifah's sexuality should be up for public debate & scrutiny. However, the women in their lives were not to be subjected to such disrespect & intrusiveness. Many of the regulars in the barber shop know that I'm gay & oftentimes I don't think they realize that their opinions are ignorant & offensive. Other times, I’m sure that they know they speak hurt.

Now, don't act like you haven't thought about it. You know you want it. Everyone thinks about it. Most of us do it, often.

The clip included shows one doctor’s efforts to use the barber shop’s nurturing environment to inform & encourage black men to attend regularly scheduled doctor’s appointments. Chicago’s “Project Brotherhood” combats the distrust in a Eurocentric medical pathology that has shown time & time again that it has no regard for the sustaining of the black man, & ultimately dispels the fear of the emasculating experience of placing one’s health in another’s hands. Black men are afraid of doctors because we don’t always comprehend that our greatness can only extend into the next generation if we honor our bodies mentally, emotionally, and physically. Signing up for proper medical & life insurance coverage has been the talk of the town or at least Washington, D.C., for over a year. President Obama mentioned his hopes to reinvent America's healthcare system & has even called for bloggers to aid the cause & spread the word. Congress plans to review the reform bill before the end of its summer session.

The barber shop is part of the black man‘s kingdom, a kingdom that requires his greatest health; a kingdom that he did not build & cannot maintain by himself. Hopefully, “Project Brotherhood” and programs like it will encourage black men to respect the Queen. There can be no U.N.I.T.Y. until he acknowledges his hand in misogyny. Till then, black women will be waiting for him to answer “who you callin’ a bitch?!”

Barack Obama is in the White House. America must now confront it's belief that black men are not in the home, that black men are not good fathers, that black men cannot provide for their families. Mr. Obama may be the father of a new hope & this era of change, but good responsible and nurturing black fathers are more prevalent than The Maury Povich Show would have us to believe. The positive black male presence is non-existent in most mainstream media. If a black man gives back to his community, he's given a 30-second blurb on the evening news; however, when a black athlete or musician commits a crime, he's glorified as if his poor behavior is what is to be expected of all black males. Anything better is frowned upon or ignored. Rappers T.I. & Lil Wayne provided money, afterschool programs, and housing for their respective communities. MTV & even BET covered the stories in less than five minutes. T.I. was recently incarcerated for weapons charges and Lil Wayne is facing jail time as well. Both artists' crimes and jail sentences have been the subject of several media outlets' Top Stories lists. Thus, it is easy and commonplace for the general public to perpetuate the lazy, careless, & absent black male stereotype.

Father's Day 2009 is a prime time to reflect on those men who have been present in our lives as father-figures. It's easy to look celebrities and socialites as if they are our only source of leadership. But, there was a time before our infatuation with glitz and glamour that we valued the town police officer, doctor, fireman, teacher, & pastor. Being a father figure and a positive male role model was important and a privilege that held more prestige than rims, bling, and the amount of women one has. Many insensitive, aimless, irresponsible males do create offspring and choose not to care for them. However, our society chooses to publicize their shortcomings & apply them to the majority who do care and provide for their families. This year's celebration of fathers should reflect the change Obama speaks of and the hope of America's future. We should rebel against the recession that aims to discount our fathers' presence and their great works. Our fathers deserve to be acknowledged for more than simply aiding in our conception.

Daddy,

It's been said that I have your ears & your temperment. I hear your voice when I stray from the path I know to be right for me. I hate getting dirty but because of you I know that a gentleman can sweat and get the job done and still look smooth and be attractive. I am slow to speak because you taught me that actions always speak louder than words, unless an ass-whooping was in order. You never taught me to wait for anyone else when I could take care of myself. I know what hard work is, but more importantly I know what hard work & good planning can accomplish because I see it everyday when I look in the mirror and reflect on our home & our life. I know that I have the world in my hands because you've placed it in my palms. I know that negativity isn't worth my time & that negative people don't deserve my company. I know that you're proud of me & that you love me; your hugs tell me that this is true. I know that you may not always understand me but you still listen and let me sort through my own confusion. I know that I have safety & peace & assurance because you're only a phone call away. You welcomed my partner into our family & we're both grateful for your support. He reminds me of you in many ways, but the longer I am with him I realize that I remind me of you. My limbs are becoming wrought with veins that say
"I'm not afraid to take my future into my own hands."
Those same veins are what I prayed for when I didn't think I looked enough like you. I wanted people to say I looked strong like my daddy, that I spoke strong like my daddy, that I made every moment count like my daddy. I'm still learning. I can still shit-talk with the best of 'em because you taught me that sometimes life is just bullshit and trees. I know that my daddy is the first man to love me without any strings attached and Scott's learning this, too.
Thank you, Daddy, for not letting go when you could have so many times before.

A grim, poignant, & tangible question it is. But, really...what do you want to do before you kick the bucket, fly the coop, go to heaven, burn in hell [Insert Samuel L. Jackson's "A Time to Kill" voice HERE.], bite the bullet, dream the sweet dream, kiss the world goodnight, head six feet under, push up daisies, take the eternal slumber?

Our country's current economic recession has made some of us a bit more cautious with our money, pinching our pennies, if you will. For some, it's a call to spend freely, and supply the economy with the money it so desperately needs. For others, the recession has many of us focusing our energy & money on tangible, practical, short-term goals. Either way, with this focus comes an awareness of one's own morality. Thus, our life priorities begin to manifest in the small day-to-day happenings: choosing to have movie night at home instead of a night on the town, at home manicures & pedicures instead of visiting the local spa, emailing (or, writing a letter!) instead of using all those daytime & anytime minutes, & carpooling. All of these require that our home unit or family/friend unit becomes priority. We recognize our need for one another during times of stress.

I brought this conversation up because with all the “Doomsday” propaganda negatively destroying our psyches, it’s good to remind ourselves how the recession is helping us (in the words of songtress India.Arie) “get back to the middle.” The next time someone bums a ride, cigarette, book, or dinner please realize that you are seeing firsthand the effect of our economy bringing people together. This is remarkable when you think about how often class and economic status works to separate us from one another.

SO…what does this have to do with your bucket list? Well, sometimes spending time with friends & family will yield perspective, perspective that will help you realize how important it is that you pursue your dreams & make them a reality. It’s high time that we all pound the pavement, travel roads less traveled, & make each day count towards achieving our best life & our best selves possible.

Go make somethin’ happen! And don’t stop being AUTHENTIC. While you are at it, extend some of that AUTHENTICITY to the AUTHENTICALLY challenged.

As the first one of the AURAL VISIONS :: Lichiban presents series, I worked on as art director// illustrator// graphic designer for NIKKI NTU's debut album produced by MeLo-X, called A History of Dreams. My story with Nikki's project began last year when MEGA, one of her executive directors beside Claude Dary (also known as MeLo-X's manager), contacted me to ask me if I'd do an art installation for Nikki's private listening party in September 2008 (here is my post about the event). After hearing the album, I was blown away by MeLo-X's super versatile production skills (this was before he dropped his first album, Mustafa's Renaissance) and by Nikki's amazing lyrical skills, and connected immediately with her message that was powerful, empowering and spiritual...a tendency I'm very happy to see growing among the next generation of artists, who are fellow seekers and are trying to communicate good, higher vibrations and a love message through their art. (I think it's becoming more and more obvious to those who read my blog that I specifically support artists who have this kind of message...As the world is heading toward a cosmic transformation and a future of global struggle, artists are awakening to their mission to counteract all the negativity that is getting released through this shift. As I've been saying it for a while, I believe there is a new ART LOVE MOVEMENT in the making and we are the builders of it. I am very conscious about connecting people with this kind of approach to doing art.) But back to Nikki, I was very happy to be part of her and MeLo's project, a beautiful ascending sonic voyage through the land of cosmic dreams and this-wordly realities.

While meditating on the cover, I'd try to focus on two aspects of her spirituality :: the visionary amazon-poet shamaness & and the modern-day warrior-priestess. The heart is a very strong symbol for her (this is another aspect on which we connected). Here is a passage from her art statement, that says so much about her spiritual stance "With strong themes of healing, revolution and love, Nikki is birthing new concepts of female empowerment but moreover people empowerment. “My music breaks down a lot of barriers in people. The rhythms bring out emotion and the lyrics stimulate the mind as well as the heart. Those simple things have a great impact on inspiring and informing folks. And when you have a safe space to put everything on the table, healing is the only outcome.” For me, this project was more than just a commissioned work...She is in many ways on the same mission that I have been traveling for a while...to mediate an old but timeless message for the present generation through her art. Nikki is an old soul and as I learned more about her and her project, I realized that two of us were meant to do this together. She had an amazingly loving & supportive core team of Melo-X, her producer, and MEGA and Claude Dary her executive producers and myself (big shout out to all three who have been giving me lots of love & support throughout as well)...the energy that went into this album and the spirit of the people involved made this project very special for me. You can expect more visual & sonic collabo's with this group in the future..it's meant to happen! Thank you!

When it comes to love, would you rather have romance or stability? Live happily ever after or simply live knowing that the bills are paid?

It’s amazing how such a question can come about. I was watching “Moulin Rouge” as part of my Sunday afternoon chillax session and the scene where Nicole Kidman’s character, The Courtesan, must sleep with the financier in order to save her lover’s (Ewan McGregor) stage show. The financier claims that it is absurd that The Courtesan would settle for Ewan McGregor’s character, the poor bohemian writer, especially when the financier can offer her a life of financial security.

One cannot deny that our most recent economic climate is affecting our relationships. In 1999, it was a tad bit comical when Destiny’s Child asked “can you pay my bills, bills, bills?” But, nowadays this question may not be out of the realm of reason when it comes to post-9/11 relationships.

Money can’t buy you love, but it can keep the lights on.

It is the realist who blooms within the confines of truth, no matter how dark, dank, harsh, or cold it may be. In the wake of our country’s transitioning beyond recession, sexism, racism, homophobia, and ultimately hate, let us remember that music is the intersection where we all meet in spite of difference. June is but a moment in American history when we can support black/African-American efforts to cement Music’s place in all of our lives.

To my Homie, Lover, Friend...Happy Birthday, KHOLI!!!

She walked into the room, following a line-up of young women that I watched from across the room. She, however, definitely stood out, with a fire-red mane, super-fab glasses that hid eyes that I would later find to be too honest for their own good, and a grin that caught my eye because I caught hers. What can I say? I’m kind of amazing. (Actually, as I was introducing myself to the room, I opened my mouth and my man-voice was M.I.A. “I fly like paper, get high like planes…”) I apologize for my shameless plug during my attempt to honor my boo. I also apologize for my failed attempt at false modesty. I AM amazing…like Yeezy and Jeezy.

So…the grin. That grin told me that she “saw” me and said grin also told me (later) “Nigga, I got plans.” But, that story is for yet another day. Over the course of the summer of 2006 and the years to follow Ms. Kholi has made it evident that friendship, love, respect, passion, and total freshness (not like body deodorant, but like “flyy,” the now defunct “swag,” and “bad” like…[Insert Michael Jackson voice here] “Who’s bad?!”) are important to her expression as a woman and as a human being.

I love Kholi because

1. She enables my random ridiculous dramatics (e.g. the aforementioned shameless plug…still many more to come).

2. She is THE only person I allow to call me MIKEY (the way she says it is so CUTE…like me *told you*).

3. She is smart like flash cards and times tables.

4. She sends the best text kisses. I promise you that when my phone receives a Kholi “muah;)”, I know my unlimited daytime minutes are well spent.

5. My mom still calls her “my enabler”; which is really the pot calling the kettle black. Trust me.

6. She wrote in my journal…and I have to admit that I read it from time to time to remember “us and our plans”…cause we got’em, yo.

7. She has a dangerous obsession with shoes.

8. When I told her that I wanted to be a stripper when I grew up, she said no. When I begged and used my charm, she still said no. She’s still saying no as I type this.

9. She inspires me.

10. She told me this, “Mikey, we’re trophy’s.” …and I believe her.

C.Y.T.Kholi, I love you. You’re my girl, sister, lover (of my soul), homie, and friend. I am so proud to label your presence in my life, knowing that none of these words properly express your impact in my world. Thank you and Happy Birthday, ma. You are truly an AUTHENTIC chick.

Mic On Monday: Mama, can you hear me?

Yesterday, May 10^th, marked the first Mother’s Day under an African America/Black President of the United States. This new era of change and hope ushers in a host of questions and concern. On my heart yesterday, as I told my mother thank you for supporting me and loving and enabling my manhood and humanity, I meditated on the children that we’ve lost within the past few months whose mothers have to grapple with supporting their child against the wish of greater society or choosing to participate in the conformist thinking of fundamentalist America. It is really important to me that the work that I do and the energy that I place into the universe encourages the humanity in LGBTQ-SGL children in spite of the negativity that rests beyond our doorsteps and even in our homes. My prayer this Mother’s Day was that our mothers, fathers, and children can begin to fight for the sanctuary our humanity deserves so that no matter what, all of our lives will be lived in the most open and positive of lights. I want mother’s of non-heterosexual children to be able to say “I love my child. I am proud of my child. I support my child,” all without the worry of what our world will think or do to spoil such a proclamation.

Please add names to this list of children who cannot say “Happy Mother’s Day.” Please add names to this list of children whose mother’s will not hear “Happy Mother’s Day.” Please add names to this list so that we will not forget the work we must do to honor these innocent souls.

Ricky Powell comes to Philly! Wednesday, May 6th

Last week, I had a chance to meet one of my favorite photographers Ricky Powell and start plotting a photo & painting collabo.

Well, they said it and it is true... Ricky aka the Rickster is the OG of street photography. A native-New Yorker, he is responsible for capturing the essence of what makes the city the cultural capitol of the world. His photos of Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim, Slick Rick, LL Cool J, Fab 5 Freddy, Steven Tyler, Dondi, Doze, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Nina Hagen, John Lee Hooker, Paloma Picasso, Calvin Klein, Barbara Walters, Grace Jones, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola, or Cindy Crawford have now become iconic mementos of some of the most influential artists that shaped the cultural landscapes of the 80s and 90s. Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word

“I’m sorry.” It’s amazing how much hurt or pain or frustration or anger is lifted off one’s shoulders when this statement is offered up as a personal sacrifice and a balm used to ease a bruised ego or upset heart. When was the last time you told someone that you were sorry, that you apologize for harming their well-being? I am always surprised at how easy it is for us to say “I’m sorry” in the day-to-day happenings such as when we forget to return a pen or paperclip to a co-worker that we borrowed from their desk. Or when we interrupt someone’s conversation. Or when we take a bit too much time at the McDonald’s drive-thru trying to find the exact change for your Southern Style Chicken Sandwich with extra pickles & and large Triple Thick Vanilla Milk Shake.*
Nevertheless, such trivial episodes in our lives for whatever reason elicit this weighty statement. However, when we hurt someone, whether intentionally or not, we seem to lose the capacity to issue this statement that is otherwise so easy to say. Why is it that the moments in which our whole being should submit an apology, we choke?

“I’m sorry” has saved friendships, relationships, and families. It’s yielded perspective and alternatives during situations where neither party wanted to compromise. It’s enabled our common humanity in times of war and chaos. It’s initiated dialogue between various peoples & nations. It’s ended arguments that may never have suffered resolution. It’s created peace.

“I’m sorry” is so profound a statement that it not only eases our spirits when we hear it from someone who has wronged us; but, it also comforts us when we apologize to ourselves. When was the last time you told yourself that you were sorry? For not acknowledging your abilities and talents? For succumbing to fear, gossip, or negativity? For not enabling your potential? For not listening to your conscience? For not respecting yourself? For not being AUTHENTIC? (ßreal talk.)

So much, that STIR wants us back once a month....we'll let you know about the next one. But, as you can tell from our faces...we were quite happy.

MIC ON MONDAY: Thank you for being a friend...even if you're a bad one.

Good day, AUTHENTIC!

I'd first like to offer a "Thank you" to one Ms. Bea Arthur. She was an American comedienne, actress, and singer. In a career spanning seven decades, Arthur achieved success as the title character, Maude Findlay, on the 1970s sitcom Maude, and as Dorothy Zbornak on the 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls; she won Emmys for both roles.(Source) Sadly, she passed on Saturday, 25 April. Corny as it may sound, her passing made me reflect on The Golden Girls and the golden girls in my life. That being said, I openly admit that this post is on some TMI ‘ish. That being said, sit yo’self down and humor me. I got woman issues.

I received a call from a girlfriend around ten o’clock one night. She and I had shared space and time for almost a year, and it was evident that we were close. I was not oblivious to the fact that she was not in favor of what she considered to be my “lifestyle,” but during the season we shared together, I chose to cultivate our friendship despite my reservations about her deeming my existence & expression as a black gay man in America a “lifestyle” and less than hers. Nevertheless, during what started out as one of our daily phone chats, she pierced my eardrum & more importantly my heart as she said, “It pisses me off that you CHOOSE to live this way!” Silence followed. I did not contact for two months. I then sent her a letter that stated she had no place in my life, but that I did appreciate the good times we spent together. Time passed, and then we agreed to meet. Actually, it was more about me visiting home, and being from a small town, my visit would have been reported. And not wanting to be a bad Southern gentleman, I let her know that I’d be in town and that we could meet up. In the back of my mind I knew this would be a means to add closure to the demise of our friendship.

Fast forward to a week ago.

She leaves a very emotional message on my voicemail crying that she wants to know what she did wrong that would end our friendship. FYI: she’s been calling for almost a year after my visit home, however, I have not answered any of her calls. Did she forget her previous asinine behavior?

Now here’s my question: When is a friendship worth salvaging? When is it worth letting go? What are some issues/actions that may possibly cease a friendship? SIDENOTE: I’m in no way interested in salvaging this relationship.

Friend says, “ What’s Mic on Monday?” I gasp. I clutch the pearls. I am befuddled. Have I not been clear in explaining the yummy goodness that is “Mic on Monday”? Immediately I send out the bat signal aka rush to my computer and begin to concoct a definition that will solidify my AUTHENTIC efforts. After much toil & trouble, I have crafted the explanation: Mic on Monday is something for the ladies. The womb is the beginning of all life. Honor it on the first day of the week. Like Queen said, “Ooooohhhh, ladies first…”

That’s right…we be droppin’ knowledge. Tell a friend.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC.org/saam) highlights sexual assault as a public health issue & advocates tailoring their campaign to better suit your community. The statistics of sexual assault as of 2007 are that 1 in 2.5 women will be raped before the age of 25 & 1 in 4 men will be raped before the age of 25. Other stats you may find are alarming, to include children.

Please take some time to visit www.NSVRC.org/saam. Your safety is key in living your most AUTHENTIC life possible.

Mic Check: do this - Don’t just share your sexual assault awareness info with your girls. Spread knowledge to your boys & see what they have to say about this 1 in 4 male statistic that will prove that it’s not about gay men raping straight men; but rather men & WOMEN seeking control and power over another human being. The Crisis Center that I work with meets guy after guy who ‘knows’ that women can’t rape & that men who get raped probably wanted it. Then we show them a case from 2005 where a man was raped by two men as his wife watched. She thought it would be ‘funny’. It was their honeymoon.

What a world we live in. I’d blame it on the alcohol, but Jamie already did that. Thus, get in the know. Don’t rely on a false sense of security. The life you save may be your own.

Good day, AUTHENTIC!

I apologize for my recent shamtasticness, however, I’ve had an icky aka cold/flu/ -- utter nastiness. Please forgive me. Pretty, pretty please? I’m on bended knee. Actually, I’m chillin’ curled up on a body pillow in my boo’s room. Nice visual, eh?

Now, down to business. This past Sunday was Easter, & whether you dig religion or not, it’s a symbol of rebirth & reinvention. It’s a time to celebrate Jesus & how he rose from the dead to dye candy-filled eggs laid by bunny rabbits in order to save us from a horrid, sinful existence in a world of primary colors, thus yielding pastels & very happy gay men with a flare for the fantastic & a love for fashion & cute handkerchiefs. This Sunday school lesson has been brought to you by the letter A & the number 2. Be blessed, my chirren! (Disclaimer: If you found any of the aforementioned statement funny, you will go to the hell.)

The term “spring cleaning” not only applies to one’s attic or closet, but also to one’s life. Dead weight friends, unhealthy habits, negative thinking, counter-productive work ethic -- must all go…much like Macy’s post-Christmas holiday discount sale. SIDENOTE: I like cute clothes. (hint) I can fit a 3/4 in Lucky Brand jeans & my shoe size is an 11 or 12 depending on the make of the shoe. (double hint).

My spectacular physique aside, Mother Universe on this day has offered us a new start with the ushering in of spring. It is your responsibility to your health & wellness -- & ultimately, your humanity -- to take full advantage of this chance of rebirth. I prefer self-evaluation to start my rebirth process; however, that does not mean that my external evaluation is not to take place simultaneously. Ask yourself some key questions:

1. When was the last time I smiled? Why?
2. When was the last time I cried? Why?
3. What do I want for my life right now (my present goals)?
4. What do I want for my life tomorrow (my future goals)?
5. What has my past taught me?
6. What answers am I still searching for?
7. What is my purpose in its purest/simplest form?
8. What would I like to improve physically? Why?
9. What do I like about myself physically? Internally?
10.How do I recognize my worth from day to day?

No, you may not look like Beyonce, or Halle, or me when you complete your tasks. Nor will you immediately find your inner Oprah or Gandhi; but you’ll begin to notice your fledgling source of inner peace & self-worth & beauty that may have gone unacknowledged during the rigors of winter.

Check in with yourself & you’ll appreciate the pearls you’ll find that exist in the treasure chest you call you.

A friend/play cousin told me this morning that there’s no reason to hang your head. At this very moment, there are people hard at work trying to steal your joy. Don’t let them. It is your choice.

It is our choice to improve ourselves, appreciate ourselves, & to encourage ourselves to be our best & most AUTHENTIC selves.

Get up.
Get life.
Get AUTHENTIC.

Halle Berry of course! ... are so indicative of what I have been feeling the last three weeks ... forget that ... the last THREE MONTHS ... or years ... whatever's most honest! lol. Between being completely violated in the airport .. to feeling like everyone knows your every move on myspace, facebook, ning, and twitter (p.s. follow us at www.twitter.com/authenticfamc), to feeling like day in and day out you are making yourself completely available to artists, managers, friends, family, students, colleagues, etc, I REALLY CRAVE THAT KHOLI QUALITY TIME.

But you know what? I daily realize, that although I think ... "kholi ... do it anyways ... this is what you were chosen to do" ... it's really not about what I've chosen at all. THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN CHOSEN TO DO. And this is why it matters.

I have honestly realized that sometimes, we complain about our greatest blessings.

"I have too much work to do. ... I can't believe this flight is taking this long ... I can't believe this line is this long ... I wish I didn't have to go to this meeting."

Honestly, in this economy, when people are losing jobs, homes, cars, families, LIVES, when people have not even been given the opportunities that we have, let alone the opportunity to complain about them ... WE SHOULD TAKE THESE TOUGH DAYS ... and BE GRATEFUL ... not for struggle ... but for the fruit of the struggle, for the gift of what sometimes feels like a curse ... even for the lack of privacy ... because it means that somewhere ... in the masses of those that just want to be nosey ... there is someone that genuinely wants to know if you are ok ... if you are safe ... wants you to know that you are loved.

because it just feels right ... NAMASTE.
